Chapter 7 Blood Magic

Though the light of the crystals was out, the growling rippling sounds of the undead permeated the air all around Kealin. He spotted Alri floating over the thralls beneath her, her force like a violet fire casting light into the burning and broken structures of the city of Eddka. As Kealin looked to the streets that she passed, he saw more undead rising to her service and running to join her in her move to the gates.

Kealin went back to Brethor and Ruak.

“We move to the last part of the city,” Brethor said.

Kealin nodded, and Ruak looked down his blade.

“I have yet to dull this, and frankly, I feel like I have had a relaxed presence in this fight so far.”

As they began down to the ground level, Brethor scanned the open buildings they passed and saw nothing but bloodshed. There were no bodies, for all the bodies were already in the service of the necromancers. The city had fallen with relative ease, and Brethor continued to shake his head at what he saw.

“I do not doubt the power we are witnessing, but the terror in the eyes of the few we have faced is enough to make me wonder of my path.”

“Our path is forward,” Kealin said.

Kealin began to run, with Ruak and Brethor just behind him. The convergence on the gateway of the city was like water rushing upon the shore of a beach to strike a rock. There were no magical defenses here, only a massive wall and a nigh inprenegable gateway.

Jesia, Ustavis, and Veora held their spells against the door. It was shaking but had not even begun to break. There were dead defenders all around them, and as several acolytes approached, the line of magic-users attempting to break through grew as they resurrected the warriors, adding even more to the army of the undead.

The undead clawed at the walls. Slivers of crystal filled the air.

Kealin went to Jesia’s side.

“What is this substance?”

“I do not know, but whatever it is prevents us from moving forward. Getting here was not too difficult, but this has proved difficult to break through.” She winked at him. “But we still try.”

Her robes furled around her as she cast another blast of magic directly at it.

Alri approached from behind them. She floated down to the ground and moved with direct purpose toward the doorway. Her staff alight, she struck the door, sending a ripple of magic and shadow that deflected off the crystal and dissipated.

“These fools!” she screamed. “They think they can keep the thralls of Mortua from their end!”

She lifted her hands into the air and let out a shrill scream. The undead began to bore into the ground, making an obvious path of upturned dirt directly under the wall. For a few moments, Kealin watched with some level of amazement, but then a sudden blast of fire erupted out from underneath the wall into the ground. The undead within were destroyed.

“More. Move into the bodies of the fallen.
